Midas's Ears

Play Summary
The play begins in ancient Phrygia (in present-day Polatlı near Ankara) with King Midas, the most famous king of the Phrygian kingdom, chosen by the gods as the judge in a contest between God Apollo and Pan for “the best music performance.” Midas, yielding to the public’s preference, awards the contest to Pan. Angered by this decision, Apollo gifts Midas with a pair of donkey ears that will reappear no matter how often he cuts them off. Midas becomes an angry, suspicious, and tyrannical king, sharing his secret only with the royal barber. However, no secret can remain hidden forever, as it rises from the deep waters and spreads like a whisper throughout the land.
